Terrible times in the Superdome an eyewitness account…

UPDATED #2 TERRIBLE NEW! I SENT THIS EMAIL TO THOSE WHO HAVE HELPED ME SO FAR!

Thank you for linking to me and helping the situation. I am again depending on your help. I don’t know if you have any contacts with FOX but I believe out of all the organizations down there they may be the only ones competent enough to help. The confusion about who is responsible for what is criminal.

My mother in law Dr. Darken who I contacted you earlier about called last night at 8:00PM pleading for us to find someway to get them out of the Hyatt where they were removed for their safety because of the situation in the Superdome. The Hyatt is becoming dangerous as well. Then at 4:00am she contacted us again to beg for food and water. She would not be begging if it were not dire. She is a brilliant woman but not the strongest physically. I am in terrible fear of her life.

Can contact someone in FOX NEWS to highlight this story? They won’t let anyone down there to help, they wont let anyone leave, they won’t feed them and they won’t give them water. The outrageousness of this is beyond my ability to express. These are doctors and nurses who worked for the city in the Shelter of Last resort. They did not stay there because of studity or negiligence but because it was their duty. The City and State governments are allowing these people to die. Some of the most highly trained staff in New Orleans are being allowed to die because of the gross incompetence. I cannot express the frustration I have to be sitting a mere 60 miles away while one of the kindest and best pediatricians is suffering and heaven forbid dying. Please help.

If you would like to talk to me please call

PLEASE EMAIL ME IF YOU CAN HELP AT fleetdefender@cox.net

I have strep right now and may not be able to stay at work much longer due to contagious policies. I do not have internet at my house.

Please help.

UPDATED Thanks to all who linked to this story! My mother in law contacted us today to say that she is alright…here is an email I sent to Michelle Malkin who was kind enough to link to this story.

Thank you so much Michelle. We heard from my mother in law today. She was moved to the Hyatt when it started getting crazy in the Superdome. She is still in New Orleans and as crazy as this seems wants to come up to Baton Rouge for a day or so then return to help. I have to say that my mother in law and I could not be further apart politically but she is by far the bravest person I know. Her daughter is only a step behind. Last night Karen (my wife her eldest daughter) drove to Houston a 5 hour drive because we got a rumor that Dr. Darken was being shipped to the Astrodome. She arrived at 4:30 and because she was not allowed into the Astrodome she stood outside waving at all the buses hoping that if her mom was in one of the buses she would see Karen and be heartened. My daughter Anna, who drove that yuppie woman crazy on the flight from Las Vegas to New Orleans when she was little bitty, seems to have both of those terrific women in her. She was recently seriously injured spent a month in the hospital, from March 4 to April 4 with 5 days in Intensive Care and was the picture of stoicism. Must be that Irish/English Yankee blood….cause I know if someone tried to stick all the stuff into Anna into me I would be blubbering like a big fool.

Anyways rambling cause I am so happy to have gotten word. Karen is still in Houston tracking down some people for others in Baton Rouge.

Careful of the reporting that chaos is cranking up in Baton Rouge. We have been tracking down all these reports in our efforts to keep our membership safe and not one of them has been accurate. We are talking to first hand sources. For instance there was a rumor flying around that the Bocage Country Club had been robbed. False. They laughed when we asked. But all of Baton Rouge is in a panic and rumors are flying.

Thanks again for all you do….

Here is a first person account of what is going on in the Superdome right now. I came to this by my plea to my Club membership by email for information regarding my Mother In Law who went to the Superdome on Sunday to help as a Pediatrician. Read this account by another Dr and understand why we are all so worried about those who went to help.

I have the name and phone number of this Doctor’s wife and am willing to disclose it to any news organization willing to highlight this tragedy in the making in the midst of the nightmare of Katrina.

Please spread the word!

Dear Friends and Family,

As many of you know, Ross has been in the Superdome in New Orleans since noon yesterday working alongside Acadian Ambulance medics to help the sick and injured refuged there from Hurricane Katrina.

He was able to get through to me by satellite phone at 4 AM today. I want to share his news with you, in the hopes that you will press your government officials and even the White House to take action as soon as possible.

Ross arrived at the Superdome at noon yesterday, as more and more people were being brought in after being rescued from floodwaters. He said that countless people had seen their family members drown right beside them. When he arrived, several emergency helicopters had been sitting on the helipad outside the Superdome for 2 hours…and no one was directing that patients be put on them to be evacuated. Ross took charge and started getting people on and helicopters out.

There are now 20,000 people inside the Superdome. The only medical personnel at the Superdome are Acadian Ambulance paramedics and EMT’s and a small team of doctors and nurses from New Mexico. They are exhausted understaffed and out of medical supplies. The only current source of medical supplies are those that Acadian is able to ferry in. Dialysis equipment is no longer functioning. Sick people are getting sicker. 30 people have now died in the Superdome, including one suicide. Ross said there have been at least 2 rapes.

There is no running water and sewage is overflowing in the bathrooms. There is no electricity or air conditioning (it is expected to be 95 degrees outside today). The back-up generators are expected to fail later this morning.

There is no plan to provide for an evacuation of the 30,000 people in the Superdome. There is no plan to evacuate the people trapped in their hotels and houses (who are almost or completely out of food and water)—when the floodwaters were still low enough, these people were simply told to “go to the Superdome”. Now they are sitting outside the Superdome because there is no room inside.

Satellite phones are not working very well, and the officials inside the Dome are having trouble calling out for assistance.

New Orleans is in a desperate state of chaos including, and the Federal Government needs to step in at a higher level than FEMA and the National Guard: we need the resources that the US Armed Forces can bring to bear.

I am writing, actually BEGGING, you to contact any elected official you know at any level to urge the White House and Pentagonto to take immediate action to step in at a greater level. Many more lives will be lost in the next few days if action is not taken.

Thank you!

Robin
