There should have been a plan for federal assistance to evacuate and secure New Orleans in the case of a flood. Everyone knew for decades that it was a possibility. The people were told to evacuate (including the bus drivers!) and the local police were left alone.

It is obvious that a police force of 1500 officers could not control the estimated 100,000 people left behind after the evacuation.

It's what, an 8-hour drive from Houston? How many military installations are in Texas? Why weren't they lined up just in case - given that this was a category 4 hurricane and the levees could only hold for a category 3?

There are no excuses here. The President says we can handle disasters at home even though we are engaged in Iraq. If he says it, I believe it. However, he didn't make sure they got on the scene.

And blaming the Louisiana Governor just makes the Bush administration look weak. Louisiana has a tiny National Guard, not nearly enough for the projected problems of this flood.

No, I'm afraid the President let us all down. He didn't step into his role as commander in chief. Indeed, he stayed on vacation for 2 days!

If something happens in my city, I hope and pray the President has learned real lessons from this experience, not just political ones.

I am very sad about the condition of the United States right now.

Thank God you all made it.
Have you seen that very very sad CNN Video of the Aussie Family?
3 boys, 1 girl, 1 dad.
Mom last called from the 'Dome,
Said she had been robbed and assaulted.
Kids, still have hope.
I hope hope conquers all.
I fear the worst.

The way LA can be dissolved into TX while still maintain sovereignty is to vote out State and Local "Federal government" teat suckers politicans who believe their only function is to cut ribbons at Convention center openings or attend Hollywood parties to hobnob with fake presidents like Martin Sheen.

It's good to hear that your mother in law survived the experience. The whole thing is just almost beyond comprehension at this point.
