A response to Gina Cobb…sorry but Islam has worn out its welcome.

Pierre Legrand’s Pink Flamingo Bar

Gina Cobb has a long well thought out article on why the cartoons controversy has gone on long enough. I disagree with Gina. While I wish that we weren’t fighting over some cartoons, which in reality are not that brilliant, the principle we are defending is the cornerstone of Western Society. The freedom of the press is worth the fight, without the freedom of expression we will become our enemy.

Gina a few questions for you. Was Mohammed a moderate or radical  ? Did he believe that aiding the infidels against other Muslims was A-Ok? What is Dhimmitude? Do you believe that Islam can be judged against the actions of its central figure as we can judge Christianity against the life of Jesus? How do you feel about this: [60:1] O you who believe, you shall not befriend My enemies and your enemies, extending love and friendship to them, even though they have disbelieved in the truth that has come to you. They persecute the messenger, and you, just because you believe in GOD, your Lord. If you mobilize to struggle in My cause, seeking My blessings, how can you secretly love them? I am fully aware of everything you conceal, and everything you declare. Those among you who do this have indeed strayed off the right path.

For sure we have many people who are helping us in this war on terror but are any of them devout Muslims? Or are we depending on the equivalent of Jack Mormons in Islam for our allies?

Because of the murders of Pim Fortuyn and Van Gogh and the threats against the artists of those cartoons, the camel’s back has finally given way. If we don’t push back hard they may actually believe that we don’t care about our own survival. They may believe that we can be pushed to give up all of our rights and freedoms if they merely threaten us. If we don’t push back now we actually hasten a war that doesn’t have to happen between Islam and the West because they may miscalculate and believe we won’t fight. The way to avoid a fight is to be strong and make it clear that we retreat no farther.
Gina Cobb: To Our Muslim Allies: Here’s What We Think of Your Prophet
Hat tip to Wizbangs Bomb Squad page which looks to be a very interesting way of collective blogging. Gina’s article was here.

Not surprisingly Bill from InDC   insults his detractors and then proceeds to get it wrong. Absolutely no one I have read and I have read all the “right wing blogs” are saying that all muslims are bad. We are all saying that Islam is bad. That is a completely different kettle of fish. But naturally I suspect that Bill will now launch into a personal attack that he hopes will cover for the fact that he has absolutely no idea what the hell he is talking about.

The Jawa Report on the other hand gets it right.

  1. It is so obvious that muslim countries discriminate against others living in their countries. Now they want to apply the same things to other non-muslim countries!! but, we should tolerate???

  2. Hi, Gina Cobb here.

    I appreciate your interesting post.

Look, I have as many questions about Islam as you do. I wonder whether there is an inherent militarism in Islam that cannot be separated from the religion. Clearly something is wrong when millions of people think it’s OK to deliberately target innocent, non-combatant men, women and children for homicide bomb attacks.

My position questioning the ridicule of Mohammed comes from a couple of thoughts.

First, as a Christian, I try to live by the Golden Rule myself. That means I am not going to ridicule someone else’s prophet if I wouldn’t want them to do the same to me. Not that I can’t personally handle someone ridiculing my religion — they can believe whatever they want –
but it just doesn’t seem like a net positive to the world. At best, it’s pointless.

Second, and this is a big one that really motivated me to write — I believe that ridiculing the religious beliefs of your enemies is not at all persuasive and actually is counterproductive. Just as I might be a little more motivated to fight someone to the death if they were not only threatening my nation’s security but ALSO puling down and trampling on the American flag (the symbolism would give me a little extra motivation perhaps), I think that ridiculing the enemy’s fondly held religious beliefs can only serve to heighten their motivation. It’s no accident that the jidahist are using the cartoons of Mohammed as a rallying cry. It works. So why help your enemy out with his motivation?

Thirdly, it does not advance our position in the war on terror at all. You don’t win a football game by drawing silly pictures of the other team even if it feels good). You win by advancing the ball on the field. We won’t win the war on terror by mocking people. We won’t gain any ground at all. It’s not how you “push back” against terrorists. And, as I pointed out above, may actually be counterproductive by stirring up extra motivation in the bad guys.

Finally, and this is the clincher for me, in ridiculing Islam itself (or its prophet, same difference), we are poking in the eye all of our Muslim allies, including most of the population or our allies in Afghanistan and Iraq and all the Muslims living in America right now who fled from tyrannical regimes like Iraq (Saddam era), Iran, and the like. We are making it difficult, if not impossible, for them to stand with us in the war on terror. Talk about making your job more difficult. When you go out of the way to insult your allies’ religion, it is going to cost you support becuase you are putting your allies in an impossible position.

It will cost us many more dollars and many more soldiers’ lives to make up for that loss. The first thing you do when you need to win a war is to line up your allies. You don’t line them up and then ridicule their most deeply held beliefs.

If you do that, you have to win the war on terror with fewer allies and a lot more motivated enemies. Pointless and counterproductive.

I realize that freedom of expression is important. I’m not advocating that any governmental entity censor anybody in any nation on earth. I’m simply advocating that going out of your way to photoshop pictures Mohammed on toilet paper is counterproductive, even though it certainly feels good to engage in a little ridicule if you’re fed with Islamic terrorists, as I certainly am.

That’s where I’m coming from. Perhaps our views are not all that far apart. I don’t disagree with much that you’ve written.

  3. Actually Claus, the sad thing is that their are not many peaceful Muslims in the world… it’s an unacceptable attribute in Islam.

Islam is radical by definition, and Europe is facing a demographic problem that can and will explode.

Imagine Europe facing daily suicide bombings like occur in Israel every day. I bet they would change their minds about how Israel handles daily terror.

  4. I fell sorry for everybody living in free countries and all peacefull muslims, but what we now have to watch is radical “Muslims” desperat attempt to stop Islam reform itself to a secular religion.

  5. There are a million Muslims in the world…most of them are as horrified at these cartoons as Christians were about PissChrist…They are blasphemy…
Ah, now notice where the riots are…a VERY small one with merely a couple hundred radicals in the UK (where a million Muslims live) ….In Gaza…they riot for any reason…and in SYRIA…
Heck, even the Dutch Ambassador on CNNI noted that Syria is a police state and there is no such things as a spontaneous “riot”…
