Hard Choices or Time to Act?

Sorry but I have to call out the idea that striking out never leads to outright success. While the massive bombardment of Germany and Japan did not cause them to surrender it certainly wasn’t irrelevant. And it is worth noting that both did indeed surrender.

The idea that this latest bunch of Islamic fanatics are somehow more able to sustain attacks than the Japanese or Germans is hard to sustain with any evidence. No one was more dedicated with a longer history of victory than the Japanese. They had never lost a war until we fought them and were so dedicated that not only did their young sacrifice themselves for victory as Kamikaze but their senior leadership would die when faced with dishonor. Entire families would commit suicide rather than allow the Allies to capture them. This was seen most tragically at Okinawa. The Islamic fanatics we are fighting now, both Israel and the United States don’t have that sort of history of victory or dedication to the cause. They are unlikely to survive a sustained assault of the sort we used to be able to deliver.

Obsidian Wings: Hard Choices: “Striking out in an attempt to achieve capitulation through pressure is unlikely to work. Massive bombing failed to break either the Germans’ or the Japanese’s will in World War II. Rolling Thunder didn’t break North Vietnam’s will. Israel’s current course of action, while understandable from an emotional perspective, seems unlikely to achieve its goals. I hope they’re not willing to go much further down this road to try and get their soldiers back. Which means their only other options are to negotiate or to cut their losses. Harsh? Perhaps, but Israel has already lost more lives in this operation than the three soldiers it hopes to save, and those numbers will only grow from here.”

Israel is reacting to the provocations of Hezbollah and Hamas. No doubt that neither of these entities are wishing for an all out war. The adults in both organizations must know that if Israel somehow breaks out of the “sending signals type of warfare” defined by Vietnam into the victory at any cost sort that actually finishes wars that both of their outfits are doomed. Both of these groups are praying that Israel does just enough damage to be condemned on the world stage but not enough damage to actually win the war. If Israel plays this limited war game they will lose.

Victory is possible but it will take the sort of horrendous loss of life that has always characterized fights for survival. This might be the last chance that Israel has to fight a war against those fanatics who are backed by Iran before Iran goes nuclear and things get completely out of control.

Remember Poland, remember that by appeasing the Germans and saving lives there we lost millions just a few short years later. I will say it again we should be fighting alongside the Israelis as this is our fight as well.
