At the heart of it is even an inability of many to recognize that enemies actually truly exist. Al Qaeda is treated as an abberation, an anomaly. The idea that it, or Hezbollah for that matter, could actually represent masses of people is dismissed axiomatically. Aside from these aberations who cannot be ignored (though they can be sugar-coated and explained away), anyone who follows them is treated as if they are merely mistaken. The idea that large amounts of people could truly wish to kill us, and be beyond negotiation, isn't taken seriously. There are no enemies, merely friends who haven't been properly educated.

They've forgotten how brutal human history and nature really is. Those who are evil and aggressive are really misunderstood and unelightened, explained by poverty, injustice, etc, etc.

The amount of marxist kant that has burrowed its way into American and European political culture is truly amazing. Even some Conservatives buy it, only by substituting capitalism for socialism, insisting that all we need to do to make them like us is to make them rich. The concept is the same, only the mechanism through which to satisfy the materialism has changed.

I'm pretty pessimisic lately too.

We're tearing ourselves apart because we've have forgotten how to make war and tell allies from enemies.

In retrospect, it's a miracle we won the Cold War when we did. Thank God Gorbachev was such a dumbass.
