This is a very disjointed attempt at collecting my thoughts on our terrible peril. We are at danger right now like no other time in the history of our nation.
Against our hopes we find ourselves spiraling away into a war against both Sunni Radicals and Shiite Radicals. The question that might be asked is should the UK Terror Plot against airliners be considered part of a plan by both houses against us, meaning Iran was sponsoring Al Qaeda. Which seems to be possible based on the reports of aid flowing from Iran to Al Qaeda even though Al Qaeda is Sunni and Iran is Shiite. Those two factions of course have battled throughout history for the leadership of Islam but there is also historical precedent for a joining when faced by a stronger foe. The prospects of facing both Wahhabis’s and Shiite terrorists should be enough to give pause to those optimists who have been declaring victory in our war against Radical Islam.
Another possibility that I haven’t seen raised is this plot was an attempt by Al Qaeda to respond to Iran’s success against Israel and by proxie against the United States. Al Qaeda is rapidly losing its mystique gained after the 9/11 attacks because of its inability since then to launch comparable attacks. Iran on the otherhand is gaining immense stature in the Islamic world because of its success against the heretofore invincible Israeli army. Al Qaeda must try to upstage Iran if it is to keep its status as the leader of Radical Islam. I don’t rate this possibility very highly because I believe that Al Qaeda must be getting its main sponsorship from Iran since Iraq has been supposedly pacified, but it bears mentioning.
I don’t believe that the UK Airliner Bomb plot was the big one. Sorry 3,000 people is a lot of people but hearing of airliners crashing into the ocean would not have had the impact that watching those towers fall did. Furthermore truth is after you have killed 3,000 of us if you want to top it you have to kill more. And these enemies of ours certainly understand this. Not only do they understand this they aspire to do just that. No it would have been terrible but it probably would have had the opposite effect on us that our enemies might have hoped for.
No to create terror and defeat our will to win far more than a mere 3,000 of us have to die. More than 10 airliners have to crash. We lost thousands of aircraft in World War 2 and hundreds of thousands of lives, we didn’t quit. No when our enemies talk of the big one I believe they actually understand that it has to be a game winner. Such as a limited nuke attack against several cities along with EMP attacks on both sides of the coast followed by threats of follow on attacks if their demands are not met. Such a scenario would see large portions of this nation clamoring for withdrawal of support from Israel and a complete withdrawal from the ME. Along with a crash program to completely end our use of foreign oil.
Sure a good portion of this country would demand an immediate counter attack but the otherside would declare it immoral to attack the main sponsor Iran. And since it would be likely we would not have proof of their complicity anymore than we had proof of Iraq’s collaboration with Al Qaeda the appeasers would be frantic in their demands of surrender. Furthermore we would be killing many thousands of people who had nothing to do with the attack. This is completely aside from the fact that when we attacked our enemies would likely detonate more weapons. No I don’t see us retaliating with the current crop of political leaders…give me a Truman or FDR and I would be much more confident.
Yes I know that we have proof of State Sponsorship of terror but President Bush declaring that there were no connections between Iraq and Al Qaeda created the perception that Clinton was right and that Stateless actors were responsible for terror. That this is a lie put together by feckless administrations as far back as Reagan to avoid holding States to account for the actions of their proxies is lost on nearly everyone. Remember Reagan did not hold Iran to account for the murder of the Marines in 1983 a Hezballah attack.
The feebleness of Olmert is creating the perception of weakness amongst Israel’s enemies. Olmert being a typical leftist/pacifist simply does not understand that by showing weakness he only encourages more violence, not less. This was a lesson that the Israelis of all people should have learned after the Holocaust. It goes without saying that the Bush Administration’s attempts at calling this a regional battle instead of part and parcel of our very own battle are not helping a weak man, Olmert, to be strong. Both of them are encouraging our enemies and allowing people like that religious maniac in Iran to think this is the time to attack us.
Things that make you go hmmmm:
- Ahmadenijad, leader of Iran, promising an answer by August 22 to the world regarding demands he abandon nuclear enrichment. Leading thinkers on Islam and the Middle East warning us that this may be a terrible day of terror based on Iran’s apocalyptic vision of Islam. (see also 12th imam ) This year, Aug. 22 corresponds, in the Islamic calendar, to the 27th day of the month of Rajab of the year 1427. - Ahmadinejad tells Israel to ‘Pack Up and Go’ President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told Israel to “pack up” and move somewhere outside the Middle East. “I advise them to pack up and move out of the region before being caught in the fire they have started in Lebanon,” said Ahmadinejad, who has repeatedly called for the Jewish state to be relocated elsewhere on the planet, the state news agency IRNA reported. “Zionists have launched their own destruction by attacking Lebanon,” Ahmadinejad added, while accusing Britain and the United States of being “accomplices in this regime’s crimes”. - ‘Divine mission’ driving Iran’s new leader Instead, they heard the president speak in apocalyptic terms of Iran struggling against an evil West that sought to promote “state terrorism”, impose “the logic of the dark ages” and divide the world into “light and dark countries”. The speech ended with the messianic appeal to God to “hasten the emergence of your last repository, the Promised One, that perfect and pure human being, the one that will fill this world with justice and peace”.
- Iran forces urged to prepare to hit Israel TEHRAN (Reuters) – Iran’s hardline forces should get ready to take revenge on Israel and the United States for the offensive on Lebanon, the head of the Revolutionary Guards was quoted as saying on Sunday. “The Basij and Revolutionary Guards should prepare to get even with the Zionists and Americans,” Yahya Rahim-Safavi was quoted as telling Islamic militiamen by the conservative Fars news agency.
- From the Highest Levels of Academia Graham Alison, the former Dean of The Kennedy School for Recovering Politicians (and out of work media hacks trying to burnish their intellectual bona fides) at Harvard, offers a simple prescription for victory in the Global War on Terror: “We must delegitimize terrorism — making it as internationally unacceptable as slavery or piracy.”
- Tony Snow President Bush’s Press spokesman “Why would it be our war? I mean, it’s not on our territory. This is a war in which the United States — it’s not even a war. What you have are hostilities, at this point, between Israel and Hezbollah. I would not characterize it as a war.”
- Text of Iranian President Ahmadinejad’s letter to President George W. Bush A call to Islam prior to the start of war.
- The War Comes to Us If, in the face of repeated threats and provocation by an aggressive dictatorship, you refuse to go to war, the war will eventually come to you. That’s the meaning of Iran’s de facto declaration of war against Israel–which is, ultimately, a new war Iran is waging against the US. Iran is so desperate for war with the West that it is bringing the war to us, openly and willfully initiating a regional conflict that may soon involve three of Iran’s proxies–Hamas, Hezbollah, and Syria–fighting against America’s proxy, Israel.
