“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” – Confucius
And so begins we hope the Western press’s journey towards realization of the deadly threat that Islam poses to its very right to exist. You may quibble that I have not put radical in front of Islam but you have not proven that such a thing as moderate Islam exists. Yes I know that everyone uses those words “moderate Islam” but none have put a face on it. Those who have tried have failed.
Anne Applebaum of the Washington Post puts the whip to the idea that the West must constantly apologize for qualities that have brought us out of the Iron Age.
Anne Applebaum – Enough Apologies – washingtonpost.com But we can all unite in our support for freedom of speech — surely the pope is allowed to quote from medieval texts — and of the press. And we can also unite, loudly, in our condemnation of violent, unprovoked attacks on churches, embassies and elderly nuns. By “we” I mean here the White House, the Vatican, the German Greens, the French Foreign Ministry, NATO, Greenpeace, Le Monde and Fox News — Western institutions of the left, the right and everything in between. True, these principles sound pretty elementary — “we’re pro-free speech and anti-gratuitous violence” — but in the days since the pope’s sermon, I don’t feel that I’ve heard them defended in anything like a unanimous chorus. A lot more time has been spent analyzing what the pontiff meant to say, or should have said, or might have said if he had been given better advice.
But she isn’t the only mainstream figure to step out. Hat tip to the IRIS Blog we find Sam Harris making a stunning admission from the left in a Los Angeles Times article titled Head-in-the-Sand Liberals Western civilization really is at risk from Muslim extremists In what must be close to what Charles Johnson from LGF calls a Pigs Flying Moment a self confessed Liberal talks about why Liberals in general cannot be trusted with the nations security. Here is a snippet:
Perhaps I should establish my liberal bone fides at the outset. I’d like to see taxes raised on the wealthy, drugs decriminalized and homosexuals free to marry. I also think that the Bush administration deserves most of the criticism it has received in the last six years – especially with respect to its waging of the war in Iraq, its scuttling of science and its fiscal irresponsibility.
But my correspondence with liberals has convinced me that liberalism has grown dangerously out of touch with the realities of our world – specifically with what devout Muslims actually believe about the West, about paradise and about the ultimate ascendance of their faith.
I mean holy smokes is that a condemnation or what? Sounds like my mother who is also a self confessed Liberal but who is clear eye’d about the threat we face. It gets worse for liberals. He takes them to task for all the sins that absolutely drive those of us who think the war is the primary issue bonkers. Stuff like the assumption that Bush is the evil one, or that Rove dropped the Buildings in NYC, and that all we need to do is give them what they want and the enemy will quit. Another snippet if you please sir:
At its most extreme, liberal denial has found expression in a growing subculture of conspiracy theorists who believe that the atrocities of 9/11 were orchestrated by our own government. A nationwide poll conducted by the Scripps Survey Research Center at Ohio University found that more than a third of Americans suspect that the federal government “assisted in the 9/11 terrorist attacks or took no action to stop them so the United States could go to war in the Middle East;” 16% believe that the twin towers collapsed not because fully-fueled passenger jets smashed into them but because agents of the Bush administration had secretly rigged them to explode.
Like the man says read the whole thing and be glad very glad that the left may be waking from their slumber. We can argue about whether medicine should be socialized after we defeat the common enemy intent on making such debates moot.
No I am not assuming that Anne is a leftist, truth is I don’t read her enough to know and she has not self identified herself as did Sam. But I will say that she has the weight of the Washington Post behind her words and that means something.
We have needed the left in this war. It is starting to become clear that it is perhaps only the left who can be fierce enough to win. After all it was the left who pursued World War 2 not to some face saving treaty but to the total and utter defeat of our enemies. Before this is over, this war we are in might just need that same sort of fierceness and I just don’t see that sort of anger in Republicans. But perhaps it is simply that I am so tired of hearing President Bush, a person I thank god was in office on 9/11, repeatedly claim that Islam has been hijacked. It has not Mr. President, not unless the hijacking started around the time Mohammed hijacked the Meccan Caravans.
