Rich Lowry on War asks the same question I have been asking for months

Which is how can it be that we, in a multi-front war, can have the same number of souls in our Armed forces that we had on 9/10/2001? How can it be that we are saving money in the military to spend it on the Prescription Drug Benefit, No Child Left Behind and the rest of the foolhardy programs that have been deemed more important than making sure we win? Do we have a Republican in the Presidency or a liberal Democrat?

If you are going to say our country is at war, act like our country is at war. On Sept. 10, 2001, when we still thought we were living in a blissful period of peace, we had a 1.4 million person military. Incredibly, after it has become clear that we are facing a generational war with Islamic radicalism, with two hot fronts in Afghanistan and Iraq and perhaps more to come, we still have a 1.4 million person military.

  1. We have had some great victories so I am not completely pessimistic. But there is no doubt that we should have gone straight to war footing 9/12. Furthermore we should not have asked anyone for permission to attack any of the enemies. Those who claim that this would have alienated friends simply do not understand human nature.

Bin Laden understood it. People will naturally get behind the strong horse…we are the most powerful nation in the world and we ask for permission from the gnats on our ass before we take a crap.

  2. Excellent question, and probably another reason why a lot of the Right, (myself included) have been less than enthusiastic about the way the “War on Terror” has been prosecuted.

Five years on, one does not continue to fight a war with your peactime Army, unless you aren’t too determined to win it anyway.

Not to hone too fine of an edge on it, but the question has crossed my mind, so I’ll ask.

Is our current “War on Terror” a real war, or a holding action? Is the current Administration just determined to lose it slowly, instead of more rapidly?

If we are in fact in a war, as I believe that we are, then the appropriate solution is to jump up and down on the opposition with both feet, as hard as we can, until they surrender. Which we aren’t doing.

So what exactly are we doing?

    Just asking.
