Why would anyone hope that Saudi Arabia runs out of oil?

Why hope that Saudi Arabia runs out of oil? Wouldn’t it be better to simply deal with what makes Saudi Arabia so unattractive as a country? Doubly so with Iran. Do we imagine that ignoring the threat will make it easier to deal with or are we hoping that without money the radicals will starve and the threat will dissipate? Seems to me that if the radicals start to perceive they are running out of money they will feel a need to act.

IS SAUDI ARABIA RUNNING OUT OF OIL? Actually, I hope so. (And it’s okay with me if Iran runs out, too). But it’s certainly a reason — well, another reason — to be pushing shale oil / tar sands, etc. Earlier post on this topic here, and don’t miss our podcast with Roger Stern and Lynne Kiesling, here. Besides all this talk of “Peak Oil” strikes me as nothing so much as a lot of people making money by catering to those who believe disasters lurk right around the corner. For a good take on why the dire predictions of Peak Oil are an illusion see this article.

  1. Nice post Pierre.

On a related note about Saddam and al Qaeda both being mentioned, looks like Saddam’s top loyalists are admitting that they once Saddam was caught they lined up to follow, none other than one Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Excerpts of the TIME interview here…
