Gloves come off? Or limited war on a grander scale?

I was for the invasion of Iraq. Saddam was a danger to the American people and Iraq was and is the central battlefront in the war against Islamic thugs. Having said that I want to say that I am not thrilled with the President’s speech. He is still trying to fight a limited war. Here is a terrific explanation of why that is a bad idea, start at the link and click around heh.

Listen I don’t really care about what damage this does or does not do to the Democrats. After all read a few stories of the sacrifices our soldiers and their families are making, isn’t indulging in political calculations insultingly petty. Are we all so power hungry that our first thoughts go to what sort of damage this does to the Democrats? How about we worry about winning. That will kill the Democrats hopes for the White House better than any calculations about their idiot statements.

So I am just asking myself exactly how successful any campaign is going to be against insurgents that doesn’t target and destroy those who fund, train and equip those insurgents. The President of the United States acknowledges that Iran and Syria are killing US Soldiers and the best he can do is use harsh language, a warning, more verbiage…I would have been more impressed if President Bush would have come on directly after a Fox Alert talking about Cruise Missiles blowing up critical factories and such inside of the two remaining terror states.

The gloves have not come off yet. He is still hoping to fight some sort of limited war. Maybe because he doesn’t have the troops to fight a broader war because he was so shortsighted 5 years ago that he didn’t radically increase the number of troops in our Armed Forces (did you know that our Defense spending is below Clinton’s as a % of GNP). Or maybe because he has simply lost his stomach for the fight. I don’t know but I do know he isn’t as tough of a War President as I could hope for.  We are at war and our Defense budget as a Percentage of the GNP is less than almost all of the years of Clinton.

President Bush had my enthusiastic support when he declared either you are with us or against us. He began losing that support when he showed that he wasn’t up to making people who kill US Soldiers pay for their murders.

I am all for the war but I am not for repeating the major mistake of Vietnam. Not going to the sources of material, money, training and men…till we do that we are not serious. It would have been nice to hear him get martial with his language, perhaps something along the lines of Admiral Halsey…probably a little over the top.

KILL JAPS! KILL JAPS! KILL MORE JAPS! You will help to kill the yellow bastards if you do your job well ”
Admiral Halsey’s famous billboard at the entrance to the Tulagi Naval Base during WW2.

But maybe he could sound like FDR when FDR made his pledge to the American People, remember this was a Democrat.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory. I believe I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again. Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger. With confidence in our armed forces – with the unbounding determination of our people – we will gain the inevitable triumph – so help us God.

So my hope remains that this is not just a feint and that he actually means to take on Iran and Syria. Michael Leeden and others including my wife happen to believe that might be in the cards. I remain to be convinced. Sure would love to be proven I am wrong by his actions. It is long since past time that we settle accounts with the murderous thugs who control Iran. I have not forgotten nor forgiven their murder of the Marines in Lebanon. The single worst terror attack against United States citizens until 9/11, committed by thugs trained, funded and equipped by Iran. Well past time we settle the account.

  2. As much as I hate to admit it, the US may as well save time, money and above all your finest and brightest and get out of Iraq now because for these very reasons “I am all for the war but I am not for repeating the major mistake of Vietnam. Not going to the sources of material, money, training and men…till we do that we are not serious.” you’ll never win.

If there is one thing I learnt as a Rifleman it’s that you dont do war half way, but that is exactly what Bush is doing.
