The cynicism being shown by the Republicans in the Senate towards their constituents is absolutely mindboggling. Here is how the game works courtesy of John Hawkins:
Before we finished up, I asked my source what he thought the prospects of passage were. He stated that it was a toss up, but that the pro-amnesty side had the momentum. I asked how that could possibly be given the outpouring of anger against this bill, and he told me that a lot of moderates were afraid of being called racists by people like Michael Chertoff, Luis Gutierrez, and Fred Barnes. He also noted that the Senate has a very insulated, clubhouse like atmosphere, and that a lot of these pro-amnesty Senators seem to be more worried about getting the President or Trent Lott mad at them than enraging the voters in their states. In addition, he told me that he thinks a lot of these Senators have “drunk the DC Kool-Aid”, and believe that they’re better off passing a bad bill, even one that won’t ultimately become law if, as expected, the House kills it, so that they can at least tell the voters in 2008 that they did something about immigration.
Remember the best defense against this is your phone. Get a list of the Senators who are planning on voting for this bill you can find that here, and call their offices in Washington DC and if you are really motivated call their local offices. Doesn’t matter if they are not YOUR representatives. What matters is your telling them that Republican support for this travesty will end your support for the Republican party. Here is a good example of a letter that was sent back to the GOP, this is exactly what I have done with the last two requests for donations to the GOP.
Tell your Senators to give us the Fence along with a some years of actual enforcement and THEN we will believe them when they promise enforcement. We have been promised enforcement since 1965 and its never been delivered. Tell them that employer enforcement is required to stop the enslavement of those south of the border. When they get self righteous about this tell them that working conditions that are the minimum for legal workers are the least you expect for illegals.
Tell them you don’t trust Edward Kennedy.
