Update: Clarified the closing…really.
Fun stories from Britain’s lovely socialized medicine. Coming to a country near you if we do not all wake up!
Patients who refuse to change their unhealthy lifestyles should not be treated by the NHS, the Conservatives said today.
In a bid to ease spiralling levels of obesity and other health concerns, a Tory panel said certain treatments should be denied to patients who refuse to co-operate with health professionals and live healthier lifestyles. | News | This is London
John Edwards just the other day:
“It requires that everybody be covered. It requires that everybody get preventive care,” he told a crowd sitting in lawn chairs in front of the Cedar County Courthouse. “If you are going to be in the system, you can’t choose not to go to the doctor for 20 years. You have to go in and be checked and make sure that you are OK.”
He noted, for example, that women would be required to have regular mammograms in an effort to find and treat “the first trace of problem.” Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, announced earlier this year that her breast cancer had returned and spread.
Edwards said his mandatory health care plan would cover preventive, chronic and long-term health care. The plan would include mental health care as well as dental and vision coverage for all Americans.
About 30% of the rise in health care spending is linked to the doubling of obesity among adults over the past 20 years.” And another two thirds of healthcare spending is on treatable diseases such as diabetes, asthma and heart disease, she pointed out.
Helping people live longer, healthier lives is also why we?re working so hard to increase screenings for breast and colon cancer and HIV, to keep criminals from getting illegal guns, to keep kids from starting to smoke and to help more adults quit, to get more nutritious meals in our public schools and to keep artificial trans fats out of our restaurants and out of our arteries.
If we allow socialized medicine into this country one of the losses we will face will be the control we have over our bodies. No doubt a case can be made that smoking is a bad idea but do we really want to live in a world where bureaucrats have the power to withhold medical care from people they believe are making bad choices? Or to make it a bit more difficult, how about if it is decided that being a vegetarian is a bad health choice? Would you be happy having health care withheld from vegetarians?
We are slowly, in the return for trinkets offered by politicians, turning over the rights to the control of our lives to nameless faceless bureaucrats. Nothing is worth losing that freedom, indeed folks have died in terrible wars defending the freedom to control our own lives. Yet we are willing to throw it all away based on the promises of politicians.
What about the rights of the minority? Where are the protections our form of government supposedly offers individuals? Even if you agree with some of the nonsense politicians are promising you should be cautious about throwing away such things as individual rights, cause one day you might be in the minority and it will be your cherished beliefs being trampled willy nilly by faceless bureaucrats. Don’t come crying then…if you speak up now!
