Building a Katrina Cottage for my folks…yes I have the best wife in the world.

We have been trying to convince my Mom and Dad to move down to Baton Rouge for quite sometime. Mostly so that they could enjoy their grandchildren without having to be subjected to body cavity searches in Norman Mineta’s world of make believe safety, flying the unfriendly skies. Well they have finally said yes and everyone from the wife to the kids cannot wait to start building their house next to ours on the other half of our fairly large lot.

The Mom said that she doesn’t want a large house due to cost cleaning and they simply like a smaller place. These are some photos of what we have in mind to build…we are likely to build the KC 612 Plan with some slight modifications.

This first set of photos are from Housing International’s factory in reserve. The house is Katrina Cottage II a 225 square foot answer to temporary housing. We are probably going to use these folks to produce the frame for a different plan. I love the idea of a factory built steel framed house constructed on my foundation that I can finish out.

The rest of these photos are from the Lowes Display in New Orleans. This is a kit home designed by Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co that Lowes delivers to your doorstep in stages. I love the plan but am not enamored by using lumbar to build anymore.

Designed to grow, this 2-bedroom cottage with 1-bathroom starts at 612-sq.-ft. and can expand over time to a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom 1,080-sq.-ft. house with a family room. This design is available with an alternate elevation.

This house looks great - I especially like the one in New Orleans with the stairs coming down the side to save space. Anyone who has great memories of New Orleans, especially in the French Quarter, would love living in this house. Keep everybody updated on your progress. (With pictures!) and good luck. Your folks are very fortunate to have such a wonderful son and daughter-in-law

140 MILE WINDS which is a lot higher than we will see here in Baton Rouge. Shutters are a design feature. And we are flood zone x which means that we are outside even 500 year flood events.

Will it handle wind? Ie how easily is it plucked off its foundation, and does it have shutters to cover the windows? And off that topic, but not far off it, what is your elevation?
