This essay by Mark Steyn seems to be directed right to my family. No doubt that I have been fighting all along. But now my wife is awakening. She is alarmed by the rush to madness that seems to be driving our society.
Well, it takes two to have a cold civil war. The right must be doing some of this stuff, too, surely? Up to a point. But for the most part they either go along, or secede from the system — they home-school, turn to talk radio and the Internet, read Christian publishers’ books that shift millions of copies without ever showing up on a New York Times bestsellers list. The established institutions of the state remain under the monolithic control of forces that ceaselessly applaud themselves for being terrifically iconoclastic: The ‘cold civil war’ in the U.S. | Macleans.ca - Culture - Media 1
Earlier he stated:
The grade schools no longer teach American history as any kind of coherent narrative. “Paint me warts and all,” Oliver Cromwell instructed his portraitist. But in public education, American children paint only the warts — slavery, the ill-treatment of Native Americans, the pollution of the environment, more slavery … There are attempts to put a positive spin on things — the Iroquois stewardship of the environment, Rosa Parks’ courage on the bus — but, cumulatively, heroism comes to be defined as opposition to that towering Mount Wartmore of dead white males.
My children understand the heroism it took to create this country and they understand why it is so different from other nations. They are skeptical of the Government, a proper attitude no matter what some “compassionate so-called conservatives” believe, while respecting those who stand between us and the worst the world has to offer.
Our children understand the war, both the internal war which is defined by the lunacy of 9/11 Truthers and the external war that is driven by Islam. Naturally given their ages 10, 6 and 4 they don’t all have the same level of understanding but they all understand that there are soldiers away from their families fighting the bad guys, making us safe.
Homeschooling while terribly difficult is the least we can do to prepare our children for the madness they will face because of the divide between the left and right. I consider it my way of making up for my failure to win or at least not lose the fight against the left.
The right, perhaps not understanding that the left meant to dismantle the system, not to slightly modify it, played by a set of rules that allowed the left to rack up win after win. The right compromised with the left, perhaps imagining that the left would return the favor. Instead what happened was the noose got ever tighter and there was never any attempt to loosen it. The left did not forsake one single goal while the right compromised on everything. My fear is that we have gone past a point of return and that all that remains is for the left and right to have a civil war. Which I believe will move from the current Cold Civil War to Hot Civil War more quickly than anyone imagines.
Perhaps there is still time to prevent a descent into a hot civil war. But we need a leader on the right who is willing to fight for principals and none have appeared. Without such a leader we will find ourselves comprising the nation into a corner from which only a fight will extract us.
The difference between the left and the right all this time has come down to this: The left are the children breaking the system because they have hated the control and the right have been trying to not allow them to break it all at once. We need to stop believing they intend anything other than breaking the system. If the right existed in a socialist system we would be the children breaking the system…and the left would be the ones attempting to preserve it.
